What is BREEAM-NL?
BREEAM-NL has been the certification method for a sustainably built environment since 2009. With the method, projects are assessed for integral sustainability. You gain insight into the actual sustainability performance of your project. Not only in the field of energy, but in the full breadth. Because BREEAM-NL is internationally recognized and has existed for more than 10 years, the certification is appreciated by the market. In this way you work visibly and measurably on achieving the sustainability ambitions of your organization.
Why BREEAM?
With a sustainable building, you save on operational costs. Sustainable projects are also popular with tenants and users; with the result that a building becomes more valuable. That added value can be as much as 20%. A building with a BREEAM-NL certificate also offers subsidy opportunities; there are various subsidy schemes you can apply for (see for example rvo.nl).
A building with a BREEAM-NL certificate is also a healthy building. This means that attention is paid to, for example, indoor climate, ventilation and, of course, lighting.
The bar of BREEAM-NL is higher than what is legally required, so your building is ready for the future and able to withstand sudden events and gradual changes.
With BREEAM-NL New Construction and Renovation, buildings are assessed on nine different sustainability topics with their own weighting; energy (19%), health (15%), materials (12.5%), management (12%), land use & ecology (10%), pollution (10%), transport (8%), water (6%), waste (7.5%) .
Getting to a high BREEAM score with Interlight
In the area of lighting, there are the following three areas of focus for BREEAM certification:
- Lighting should support a healthy, comfortable workplace
- Lighting must be energy efficient
- Light pollution to the outside should be minimized
A healthy, comfortable workplace
To achieve a healthy, comfortable workplace, lighting must meet a number of requirements:
- Minimum 500 lux at workstations (visual task area) for offices, 300-500 lux for schools.
- The glare factor (UGR) of luminaires should be less than 19
- Color rendering (CRI) should be above 80 for true-to-life color perception
- Daylighting through windows or skylights is a requirement
- Individual control of lighting by workstation or zone

Energy efficiency
Led lighting is by definition energy efficient, but of course there are (large) differences in the degree of efficiency of luminaires. For BREEAM certification, choose luminaires with an efficiency of at least 120 lm/W.
In addition, additional energy savings can be achieved by using sensors:
- Daylight sensors, as in our Thinq luminaires, automatically dim when there is sufficient daylight, so you can always be sure of 500 lux in the workplace.
- Presence sensors in offices, classrooms, washrooms, etc. ensure that lights are on only where they are needed. Up to 70% energy savings can be achieved with these simple adjustments.
To qualify for BREEAM certification, all of this must be substantiated with a lighting and sensor plan (substantiated with BENG calculation or EPC). Our technical advisor Michel is happy to help you with this and can provide a lighting and sensor plan.
Light pollution
When outdoor lighting is used, it should be used only where functionally necessary. In addition, it is important that the lighting be shielded and controlled by a timer or motion sensor.

When a good lighting design is created and implemented, up to 22 points for BREEAM certification can be achieved:
